Questions parents ask

Good to know.

How are carers vetted?

Every carer has an enhanced DBS check, paediatric first aid and two written references, and we interview them ourselves. Some of our carers are also registered childminders, which is a plus. If your nanny or childminder is on Ofsted's register, you may be able to pay them with Tax-Free Childcare.

How does finding a childminder work?

Tell us your start date, days, hours and your child’s age. We’ll introduce you to Ofsted-registered childminders near you who have space, including our own setting, which is run by Little Village’s founder. You can message them in your account, see each one’s latest Ofsted inspection, and visit before you decide. You agree your days, fees and contract directly with the childminder you choose. It’s free for families and childminders.

How many carers will my event need?

Each event nanny looks after up to four children (three if they're aged 1), and every baby under 1 has a carer of their own. You can add more carers if you'd like closer care. A crèche has at least two carers and up to four children each, with the same rules for babies. The booking form works this out for you.

How do I pay?

For events, we send a secure payment link for a 25% deposit once we've confirmed your carers. The balance is due 7 days before the event. For babysitting, we send a secure card payment link once we've matched your sitter, and your booking is confirmed when it's paid. The payment is held until after the sit, then your sitter receives their full rate. If you'd rather pay your sitter directly, just tell us; the service fee is then paid to us separately.

What is Village Membership?

Members pay a 5% service fee on babysitting instead of 15%, with no minimum. Your favourite sitters are offered your bookings first, and members' Friday and Saturday requests are filled first. It's £14.99 a month for your first 3 months, then £24.99 a month. The £14.99 price is for your household's first membership. We'll remind you a week before your price changes, and there's no contract, so you can cancel any time. Find out more.

What does an overnight stay include?

The carer looks after the children from 10pm to 7am and is on hand through the night, for £180 per carer. You provide the carer's room (their own, or shared with the children) plus their evening meal and breakfast. Hotel rooms are booked and paid for by you.

What if I need to cancel?

Babysitting:

  • More than 24 hours before: a full refund, including the service fee.
  • Within 24 hours: half your sitter's pay is refunded, and the other half goes to your sitter. The service fee isn't refunded.
  • Within 3 hours of the start, or a no-show: your sitter receives their full pay.

Your sitter has kept the evening free for you, so any of their pay that isn't refunded goes to them. If your sitter cancels, you get a full refund and we'll try to find you a replacement.

Event nannies and crèches:

  • More than 30 days before: everything is refunded except the deposit, which you can move to a new date once within 12 months.
  • 7 to 30 days before: the deposit is kept and anything else you’ve paid is refunded.
  • Within 7 days: no refund. Your carers receive their share for keeping the date free.

If we or your carer cancel, you get a full refund. Read the full cancellation policy.

What if I’m home late from a babysit?

No problem, just let your sitter know. Your sitter starts the sit timer when they arrive and ends it when you’re home, so the time is exact and you can see it in your account. You always pay for the hours you booked. Time past the booked end is added in 15-minute blocks after 5 minutes’ grace, at your sitter’s rate plus the usual service fee, charged to the card you booked with. Your sitter receives all of the extra time, and you’ll get a receipt showing it.

Do you cover events outside London?

Yes. We match you with a vetted carer local to your venue from our growing network of childminders across the UK. Travel is included up to 10 miles from your carer. Beyond that, it's 45p a mile per carer, paid to your carer.

Who will my carer be?

A self-employed, vetted carer from the Little Village network, local to you. Some are also registered childminders. Little Village matches you with the right carer, handles the booking and stays your point of contact throughout.

What's the difference between a live-in and a live-out nanny?

A live-out nanny lives in their own home and comes to yours each day, usually around 50 hours a week. In London they average about £21.63 an hour gross. A live-in nanny lives with your family, with their own private bedroom and meals included, and usually works around 60 hours a week. They average about £16.43 an hour gross, lower per hour because their room and food are provided. Our placement fee is 12% of first-year salary for live-out and 15% for live-in, because live-in roles take longer to fill. Either way, the nanny is your employee.

How do I pay the nanny placement fee?

There’s nothing to pay unless you hire. A £400 deposit starts your search; it comes off your fee, and it’s refunded if you don’t hire a nanny we introduce. You can pay the rest on your nanny’s first day, or spread it over up to 12 monthly payments with no interest or extra charges. The fee is 12% (live-out) or 15% (live-in) of first-year salary, includes any VAT, and comes with a 12-month replacement guarantee and back-up babysitting with no service fee while your nanny is off in their first year.

Can I pay for a nanny with Tax-Free Childcare?

Only if your nanny is on Ofsted's voluntary Childcare Register. We can help your nanny register.
